A Tsechu is a festival in honour of Buddhist Saint Padmasambhava, popularly known as 'Guru Rinpoche', the saint who was responsible for introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. The Tsechu draws hundreds of Bhutanese people in a spirit of reverence, blessing, festivity and celebration, and is one of the best ways to experience the ancient living culture of Bhutan.
The Tsechu comes to life with colour, music, dance and drama as villagers and townspeople gather to witness the masked dances, sword dances and other sacred rituals. These events, most of which are performed by monks in colourful and elaborate costumes bring blessings to the onlookers, as well as instructing them about the Buddhist Dharma.
There are various Tsechus all year around at temples, Dzongs and monasteries throughout Bhutan. BTB can easily tailor your tour of Bhutan to incorporate one of these striking celebrations of Bhutanese culture. For a list of upcoming festival dates, click here.

In 1907, after several centuries of divided rule by various influential families, his majesty Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck unified Bhutan under the name of Druk Yul - Land of the Thunder Dragon. While 2007 marks 100 years of monarchy in Bhutan, it is an inauspicious year according to the Bhutanese calendar, so celebrations to mark the occasion will instead happen in 2008.
Many festivals and unique touring programs have been planned to celebrate this momentous event. Visitors to the Kingdom in 2008 will be given a unique opportunity to experience the real Bhutan through the Centenary maxim of "Meet the Bhutanese". Travelers will have the chance to immerse themselves into the soul of Bhutan with the opening of areas normally closed to tourists such as Royal Palaces, National Parks and specialised trekking routes. For those yet to experience the magic that is the Kingdom of Bhutan, 2008 presents the perfect opportunity to witness a nation in jubilation.
THE CORONATION OF THE FIFTH KING OF BHUTAN
Witness history in the making as Bhutan celebrates the coronation of their Fifth King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) will don the Raven Crown and formally assume the embodiment of the Supreme Protector in November 2008 followed by 3 days of celebrations in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Proceedings will include the opportunity to offer ‘Tashi Khadar’ (good wishes) to the Druk Gyalpo at Tashichhoedzong, a public speech by his Majesty the King, and a celebratory program at the Changlimithang Stadium featuring diverse entertainment from every corner of the kingdom and the chance to participate in traditional games and competitions. There will also be a special exhibition in Thimphu celebrating 100 years of Monarchy in Bhutan that will feature the more than 100 year old Raven Crown and other royal adornments including crowns, traditional shoes, and silken ghos and dresses with intricate patterns. A very special exhibition of royal imagery will also be open for visitors at the National Museum in Paro. Many of the images are very rare, and have never been seen before and will only be exhibited until the end of 2008.
We have put together two very special, exclusive programs for those who would like to visit Bhutan for this very auspicious occassion. Our 9 day and 14 day Coronation tours have been designer to compliment this once-in-a-lifetime experience with a truly unique and breathtaking experience of Bhutan’s awe-inspiring landscapes, Buddhist culture, stunning ancient fortresses and welcoming, friendly people. These programs, along with our entire range of tours and treks are entirely flexible and can easily be tailor made to suit. |
THE RAVEN CROWN CELEBRATION
